The European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) is the world’s most successful IT skills certification programme. To date, nine million people have undertaken an ECDL programme in more than 60 countries worldwide.ECDL
The ECDL syllabus describes the knowledge and the skills required to achieve the ECDL standard. It covers basic computer skills and the use of common applications in the workplace, the home and in society in general. It is divided into seven modules, 6 practical and 1 theoretical.
A test in each module must be passed before the ECDL certificate is awarded.
The tests in these modules do not have to be taken in any specific order. When a candidate registers on an ECDL programme, they receive a Skills Card on which their progress through the seven tests is recorded. When all seven modules are completed, the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) is awarded.
ECDL Start
ECDL Start is a certificate which certifies the passing of any four modules of the ECDL programme. The ECDL Start certificate will list any four completed modules (as specified by the candidate). The certificate clarifies the fact that ECDL Start certifies part-completion of the entire ECDL syllabus by stating: “The ECDL Start certificate is awarded to a candidate who has completed four out of a possible seven modules of the ECDL programme. The certificate does not indicate that the candidate has completed the ECDL certificate.”
ECDL Advanced
The skills covered in Advanced ECDL concern more complex tasks and deal with a richer and more extensive functionality of common applications. In general, the ability to create and manipulate larger, extended files is required for advanced certification. It is divided into four modules:
On completing the ECDL Advanced programme, a candidate is a proficient computer user who had high-level skills in the four applications, and has gained a degree of institution in their use. The successful candidate will be fully conversant with the scope of the applications, and the interactivity of related applications.
ECDL Expert
ECDL Expert is now available to anyone who has successfully completed the four advanced modules. This certificate clearly demonstrates that the holder has a comprehensive knowledge and skill level in computer applications. The ECDL Expert can be applied for on behalf of the candidate by the test centre where they sat the four ECDL Advanced Exams.
